Background remover

Remove a background, keep the editable layer

Pixopea’s background remover runs the U²-Net cutout on the platform’s CPU and returns the result as a new layer. You can mask the edges, place the subject on a new colour or image, and export without flattening the rest of the document.

Your file is opened locally. It is uploaded only if you save a cloud project or run an AI tool.

How the cutout works

Send the current layer to the AI tool and the editor queues a background-removal job. The result replaces the layer’s content on a new editable layer, so the original is still available underneath. The first run after a server restart can take longer while the model loads; later runs are usually much quicker.

What you can do next

Refine the result with a mask, soften the edge, add a new background image or a solid colour, and keep the subject on its own layer for a template. The cutout is not a flattened PNG, so a later change does not mean starting over.

  • Retouch the mask without destroying the original
  • Combine with text, shapes and adjustment layers
  • Use the cutout in a template or export it directly

Credits and availability

Background removal needs a signed-in account and costs one credit per run on the built-in model. Provider-served alternatives may cost more and are available only when an administrator has connected and enabled that provider. It is not an unlimited free service.

Common questions

Is background removal free?

It is credit-based. A free account includes 50 credits per month with daily and monthly limits; one built-in background removal costs one credit.

Can I remove a background as a guest?

No. The guest editor can edit and export locally, but AI jobs need a signed-in account and a running AI service.

Does it work with hair, fur or transparent objects?

The U²-Net model handles many subjects well, but fine hair, glass and very low-contrast edges usually need mask refinement. The result is a layer so you can correct it by hand.
